The film follows Tenzing Norgay (Genden Phuntsok) from his early years working for a Sherpa family in the sacred village of Tengboche, where he grew up dreaming in the shadow of Everest.
He starts out as an illiterate yak herder, runs away from home as a teenager, and nearly becomes a monk.
Nearly two decades later, with encouragement from his wife Dawa and help from expedition secretary Jill Henderson (Caitríona Balfe), he persuades Colonel John Hunt (Willem Dafoe) that he belongs on the 1953 British expedition as a climber, not merely as hired help.
Where the Western climbers see Everest as something to conquer, Tenzing reveres it as Chomolungma, the sacred mother goddess.
The ascent is shaped as much by tensions of class, culture and ambition as by the dangers of the mountain. Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston) appears as a supporting character, with Tenzing’s own journey firmly at the centre.
It’s directed by Jennifer Peedom, who made the documentary Sherpa, and executive produced by Tenzing’s son, Norbu Tenzing.
