For eight years, Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) has lived a quiet suburban life as a schoolteacher and devoted mother, with no memory of anything before she washed up pregnant on a New Jersey beach.

Then a car accident and a TV appearance stir up flashes of a past she can’t explain, and dangerous people start coming after her.

With the help of Mitch Henessey (Samuel L. Jackson), a down-on-his-luck private investigator she hired to trace her identity, Samantha starts piecing together the truth.

She was once Charly Baltimore, a lethal CIA operative, and the enemies she left behind are very much alive.

As her old instincts and skills come roaring back, she has to work out who she really is while protecting her daughter from a conspiracy that wants her dead. It’s a slick, funny, over-the-top Christmas-set action thriller written by Shane Black, of Lethal Weapon fame.

It was released in 1996, and it’s a natural double bill with Cutthroat Island, since it reunited Geena Davis with director Renny Harlin, her husband at the time.

It underperformed at the box office but has become a cult favourite, often ranked among the great alternative Christmas action movies alongside Die Hard.

Shane Black’s script reportedly sold for a then-record $4 million.
