Elmo McElroy (Samuel L. Jackson) is a brilliant chemist who has invented a powerful new synthetic drug, POS 51, that can be made from legal, over-the-counter ingredients.
He double-crosses his ruthless LA employer, The Lizard (Meat Loaf), and heads to Liverpool to sell the formula to a local drug lord for a fortune. His minder there is Felix DeSouza (Robert Carlyle), a hot-headed, Liverpool-obsessed fixer who just wants to finish the deal in time to make the big match.
Things go wrong almost immediately. The Lizard has sent a top hitwoman (Emily Mortimer) after Elmo, and she happens to be Felix’s ex. Rival gangsters, crooked cops and a skinhead gang also join the chase.
The result is a fast, foul-mouthed action-comedy full of gunfights, car chases and British gangster attitude.
It was released in 2001 and retitled Formula 51 in the US. It’s a cult favourite for fans of Lock, Stock and Snatch. Critics were mixed, but Jackson and Carlyle make a very entertaining odd couple.
